Meet our Team

Dr. Robert Compton, Head of School

Dr. Compton is in his 17th year of working in education.  He graduated from Winthrop University with a B.S. degree in special education: severe disabilities and a M.Ed. in special education, with a concentration in educational leadership.  Dr. Compton earned his Ph.D. in educational leadership from Northcentral University where his research focus was special education teacher burnout and retention in South Carolina.  He spent 8 years as a classroom teacher in S.C. public schools and 8 years as a district administrator with the South Carolina Public Charter School District.  It was during his 8 years working at the SCPCSD that his passion for charter schools developed as he saw the role that charter schools play in providing choice and improving the outcomes for children in South Carolina.  Before joining the Riverwalk Academy Team, he served as a Transformation Coach with the SC Department of Education where he worked with school leadership teams in the State Priority Schools to improve the leadership and instructional capacities of the schools.  In addition to holding SC licensure in the area of special education, he is also certified as a K-12 principal and district superintendent.
