August 04, 2017 Riverwalk Academy Updates

Dear Riverwalk Families,

Summer is quickly winding down and we are gearing up to start the new year. Everyone here is super excited to begin this new journey with you all. As you prepare for the start of the year, please take the time to look through our website and get familiar with where links are located. We also have a Facebook page that you may want to "like" and follow.

Our new Student-Family handbook will be available online soon for you to review. Our teachers will also go over this information with your child during the first few days of school. We encourage you to look through it and become familiar with the dress code & code of conduct. The other information in this handbook may be able to answer questions that you may have about services offered at the school or key contact people. As always, if you have any questions feel free to contact someone at the school and we will be glad to assist you.

Our first day of school for students is August 17th. We will start classes promptly at 8:00 AM. There will be someone here to greet your child and direct him/her to their classroom. If you have a younger child and want to come in to walk him/her to their class, please be sure to park where you are not blocking anyone in. Remember, if you do plan to come in on the first day of school, you will need to stop and sign in the 'FIRST DAY GUEST BOOK' so that we know you are in the building. We ask that you walk your child to their classroom and say your goodbyes. I know this can be an emotional time for both you and your child, but please know that we will take very good care of him/her. These emotions are quite normal.

We will dismiss at 11:30 AM on Monday, August 21st. This is in preparation of the historical eclipse that will take place. This event is estimated to affect our area at approximately 2:40 PM. Our PBL Coach, Ms. Wilson, has been working very hard to create a fun activity for our students to do on that day in preparation for the eclipse. *** PLEASE keep all cereal boxes and send them to school with your child on the first day of school. The activity that they will be completed requires one.

If you are interested in the before and/or after school care offered by iWin, please look on our website for a link to their information under the Parent Resources tab. This is an outside vendor, but they do use our building for this program. The before school care is free for parents but children still need to be signed up through the iWin page, and there is a competitive rate for the after school care. IWin begins receiving children at 6:30 AM for before school care and they are here until 6:00 PM for after school. They do start after school care early on Fridays to accommodate our half days.

Our Meet & Greet will be held on Monday, August 14th, from 4 PM - 6 PM. We will have bouncy houses and food trucks here for you to enjoy while you are visiting. Postcards were mailed out to let you know who your child's teacher is. If you do not receive a postcard by Wednesday, please email Shenelle Mabey at Some postcards were held back due to missing paperwork. It also may be that we have an incorrect address and need to ensure that we fix that!

Middle school students will receive their full schedules at the Meet & Greet. If you do not attend the Meet & Greet, then the schedule will be available at the school until the first day, after that the homeroom teachers will have them and give them out when your child comes to class on August 17th.

The middle school modular has arrived and is being constructed. Once the building is completed, the electricians and Duke Energy will have to connect the power. Once that is done, we will undergo an inspection by the Office of School Facilities in order to get a certificate of occupancy. This process should not take long if all goes as scheduled. However, in the event that all of this is not finished by August 17th, we do have a Plan B for our middle school students until we are given the green light to use the modular. This plan is to use the elective PODS until it is ready. If this occurs, we do not anticipate it being very long at all. We had the opportunity to walk through a portion of the building and it is amazing. The rooms are very spacious and it is built extremely sturdy. We can't wait for our middle school students and parents to see it!

Please check our website for upcoming events, such as dances and other fun activities. We now have the option to purchase tickets and school-spirit wear online through our website. We still accept cash and check as well. Please remember that if you send any cash or check with your child to have it labeled in an envelope. This is extremely helpful as we receipt it, especially for the younger grades.

We hope you enjoy the remainder of your summer. We look forward to seeing you on August 14th at the Meet & Greet.
