Rock Hill, SC – Riverwalk Academy is pleased to announce that Michael Graham has been named middle and high school assistant principal.  Mr. Graham, retired US Marine gunnery sergeant, joined the Riverwalk Academy team in January 2018.  During the 2018 – 2019 school year, Mr. Graham taught career and technical education courses and was instrumental in the creation and establishment of Riverwalk Academy’s business education program and Business Professionals of America (BPA) inaugural student chapter.  In its initial year, Mr. Graham worked with a team of students, 5 of whom went on to become state finalists and national qualifiers.

What makes Mr. Graham the ideal person for the middle and high school assistant principal role is the positive relationship he has with the middle and high school students, their parents, and staff.  His consistency and fairness are exactly what our middle and high school students need. Mr. Graham has shown that he is able to foster positive, healthy school climates while helping students learn from their mistakes.

In addition to building positive relationships with students, Mr. Graham is also a leader among his colleagues.  His colleagues describe Mr. Graham as a mentor and coach.  “Mr. Graham is not a positional leader,” says Dr. Compton, Riverwalk Academy Head of School.  “Some people lead through their titles, and some lead through their actions. Mr. Graham is the latter of the two. He’s truly an authentic leader, but the great thing about it is that he doesn’t realize that he’s leading.  He’s just being his natural self.”

Mr. Graham will be joining the Riverwalk Academy administrative team, which includes Ms. Erica McCray, elementary assistant principal, and Dr. Robert Compton, Head of School.
